Introduction
The Yale Curling Club was founded six years ago by nursing student Kelsey Schuder. Since then, the curlers have grown to a much larger community, have been to the national college curling championship four times (in 2017 they only lost in the Semi-Final to the National Champion Minnesota), now now a much larger array of events during the week, and also host one of the largest college bonspiels in the country. We welcome any curler or non-curler who would love to try out this amazing sport and become part of your community. If we do not have a learn to curl scheduled - email us and we will arrange something.
Sunday Practice
Every Sunday we practice for three hours in Bridgeport. Many of our members have a car in New Haven and we arrange car pools for everyone’s convenience. During practice we first do drills to improve our technique followed by a scrimmage game. We often hang out afterwards to have some dinner, watch some TV, or just chat. Our coach Ed regularly comes to these practices for sharing his curling wisdom.
Bonspiels
Each year Yale sends several teams to the Bonspiels in the east. They take place near Philadelphia, Boston, Schenectady (NY), Rochester (NY), Belfast (ME), Bridgeport, Utica (NY), CapeCod and the National College Curling Championship. It is our philosophy to mix teams with experienced and newer curlers so that the new curlers can learn from the more experienced once. Bonspiel weekends are a lot of fun (and everyone understands if you need to do homework for a bit). You meet people from all across the country and there is an amazing comradery between college curlers. You will eat together, curl, and enjoy a good company.
Social Events
We have a vast range of fixed social activities on our annual calendar: Summer BBQs, the Nutties (a formal Christmas Dinner), an end of year party (where we can do silly things on the ice), a Super Bowl Viewing Party, making decorations for our bonspiel, the TIM and Dan Classic (a game between MIT and Yale), trivia nights, and many more. We will make sure that we keep the spirit of curing on and off the ice!
Tuesday Night League
On Tuesday night, Nutmeg Curling has their competitive league. The level of this league is higher than college curling bonspiels and great practice. You need to be a full Nutmeg Member to participate in these. If you want to join a team please email the Team Skip who will coordinate. As this is a weekly league and there are only a very limited number of spots you are expected to make most (of course not all) of these sessions.
